I don't know how many months its been since I wrote anything. Obviously consistent blogging is not the cornerstone of my life. It seems lately, playing my cello has been my choice for sorting through my thoughts, expressing raw emotion. Music is strange like that. Sometimes music can just express things words can't. I got to thinking about this today when I read Linford Detwiler's(Over The Rhine) own analysis of his new album of instrumental solos, titled "Unspoken Requests." He was speaking about the process of improvising on the piano, alone in a room, just expressing what is inside through the instrument. He senses sometimes that it is a form of prayer, that the Lord is listening. I believe I know exactly what he is talking about. Music is such a powerful gift from God. As a mennonite boy, I almost think of this form of playing an instrument, improvising alone, as a parallel to how some Christians feel about praying in tongues. But that's just a thought.
